Berkhamsted School lost 233 students during World War I, whose names now appear on the memorial outside the school chapel.
Our site tables contain a record for each Berkhamstedian, detailing the rank and regiment of the individual as well as information on their life at school and place of burial (if known).
The average age of death was just 22, the youngest only 12, torpedoed by the German submarine U20. Pupils from all three forces fought for Britain, France, Canada, South Africa and Austrailia.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
